Wooden shoes are made from different types of wood and are available in different styles.
Wood selection
Nijhuis produces its wooden shoes in poplar (95%) and willow (5%).
Poplar is used for different reasons:
| - |
There are a lot of Poplar trees in the Netherlands. This is because they need a lot of water. These trees are very functional in a country that is rich in water like the Netherlands: They absorb the excess water and ensure proper draining. |
| - |
Poplar wood is also very lightweight, which is very practical when wearing shoes made of this wood. |
| - |
Thirdly, the wood is very porous. This ensures good insulation: Warm in the winter, but with good ventilation: It is cool in the summer. These shoes wick away moisture, thus they are very hygienic. |
| - |
Another advantage is that the wood is easy to carve because it is a soft wood. |
| - |
Finally, poplar trees grow quickly and are therefore relatively cheap. |
There is a good reason to select willow:
| - |
Willow is sold mainly in the northern provinces of the Netherlands because the big advantage of this wood is that it is extremely waterproof. |
