Types of wood
Klompenfabriek Nijhuis produces wooden shoes from poplar and willow wood. The northern provinces in particular sell a lot of willow wood. Click on “Wooden shoes” -> “styles” to see how and why certain types of wood are chosen”.
Style
In addition to the choice of wood, there are also a number of different wooden shoe styles available. A wooden shoe that will really be worn is usually a “rondneus” (round toe). This style has a rounded toe. The “spitsneus” (pointed toe) is generally sold as a souvenir.
Design
Each wooden shoe maker has his own farmer’s design. This is a design that used to be applied using a striper, paint and buttermilk. It is one of the simplest designs, but very appealing.

Many designs have been added over the years. For example, think about the “koedecoratie” (cow design), cow spots on the shoes. And of course, wooden shoes with “Dutch design” for the tourists. That is usually a design with windmills, tulip fields, channels and tulip girls.
